Hey 3Dmotive Community!

I've followed this site from the ground up and always come here first for inspiration and knowledge when starting a new project. I recently finished a semester as University where I created a level using the Unreal contents. Would be nice for some feedback.

here is the link

I also created some of my own assets for this level (which did not get put in due to time constraints). I would really like to thank Andrew Hackathorn for his help and advice as this was my first time baking high poly work down to low (properly). His work is very clean and crisp and I tried to catch that in my work too.

here are some of images: Any crit is good crit http://www.3dmotive.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Hey Chris,

Is any of your own content in the video? It was hard to tell what was stock UDK and what was yours (after having looked at your prop sheets on your site). A lot of your stone structures came out quite well. I think adding some additional earthy elements would take it up a notch (dirt, moss, etc).

My biggest suggestions for the video are from a level design (and a some aesthetic) position. There are a lot of 90 degree angles and harsh edges that could be broken up. Imagine if the corner of your grass planter was crumbled etc. The scene is also missing a strong spacial identity. What purpose does it serve? Who uses it? Etc.

And be sure to get some vertex or material blending going on the ground ;)

What I thought when watching this was it needs a big waterfall with water running though small sections or the level Looks great for a first level two thumbs up :D

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Tyler: All the assets are from the Unreal Editor and not my own sadly. I'd like to add additional moss and dirt etc but feel that is probably better achieved in UDK opposed to a be applied to the normal map (like in your modular building tut you did, which is brilliant may I add). I really need to understand the materials and develop a better awarness of what can be achieved in UDK, so gonna cram a load of 3DMotives tuts in next week when I finish the semester as Environments and Level design is a career I would like to pursue.

As for it's identity... It's supposed to be a small section of a maze. I strongly agree with the 90 degree angle though and is something that should have been broken up and avoid further modularity.

Malcolm: I actually placed a waterfall inside there but had some problems when trying to move it around so sadly I had to cut it. :( ........ really like your head sculpts on your site btw.

Is there anything you guys think I could add to my portfolio to make it stronger?

Thanks once again :)

Hey Chris, you've made some awesome progress on your site these past few weeks. Your textures are definitely improving.

To make your portfolio stronger, you will for sure need some actual environments or small vignettes, comprised entirely of your props/lighting/post. Think of what you did with the UDK flythrough but with all work yours. Having just a couple of these environments would help your portfolio tremendously. Then at then end, when you are about to graduate, you can cut some of the weaker pieces of art. Keep at it!

For the portfolio maybe some variety in different styles of environment using 100% your own artwork so it shows off what you can do. You could create smaller sections of them to save time or maybe just a collection of high quality props and modular pieces.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still working out the kinks in UDK but making steady progress. I'm working on a scene at the moment which will be comprised of all my own assets so hopefully this will add to my portfolio and like Andrew said eliminate some of the weaker areas.
